Work on strengthening health systems in ART roll out

EQUINET is carrying out work with REACH Trust Malawi and in co-operation with a wider range of partners in the region and internationally to identify options for a sustainable and equitable path to realising the urgent imperative of making antiretroviral therapy (ART) available to southern Africans and the long term goal of universal treatment access. We have commissioned and reported on research in countries and at regional level on equity issues in health sector responses to HIV/AIDS. We have identified with our partners principles to guide a sustainable and equitable response that addresses the urgency of the need to expand treatment access and the demand to do this in ways that strengthens the public health systems in southern Africa.

We are now working with a wide range of institutions in the region and internationally to take these principles forward through policy processes, through providing evidence of good practice and through monitoring equity and fair process in access to ART.

This work is being implemented through REACH Trust Malawi as theme co-ordinators

EQUINET has co-operated in this work with Oxfam GB, UNAIDS and DfID and is continuing to co-operate with these organisations in the follow up programme and with SADC, WHO, the Pan African Treatment Access Movement, Health Action International (Africa), IDRC (Canada), SDC (Switzerland), DCI (Ireland) and others.
